Neither the artists name nor his motives reveal that he has lived in Europe for the past many years. His works are strongly influenced by the early expressionists such as the "Blau Reiter" movement in the early 20th century with one exception though "the Soul of Africa", which is the "force majeur" in most of his works. He sees himself as a true South African expressionists. With a volcanic and very colourfull pastos kept entirely in Franz Marcs spirit, he paints groups of Africas majestic Giants in a multitude of colours, nicely arranged and yet spontaniously floating by on the background of colourfull african landscapes with the eternal suns burning rays as a centerpoint, all an expression of his own firm belief in the powers of light, while showing the Africa which still plays such an important part in his life. As an artist, Robert McLean has allways respected realism and superrealism as wonderfull forms of art, though after having mastered these forms for many years, he has now found the freedom to express himself spontaneously and expressionistic.Under his carefull brushwork the majestic giants of Africa are freed from the constraining and inhibiting realism. Elephants and rhinos, zebraes, giraffes and leopards and lions dressed in multitudes of colours are all leaving their traces across the canvas. It is Robert Mcleans utmost wish to make people see the nature of the world and of his beloved Africa as "live art", and to make people realize the importance of supporting the fight to preserve the huge and beautifull heritage that has been granted us all. Hoping that the struggle to save the many wonderfull "Giants of Africa", such as the black rhinos and the elephants, the artist has contributed by donating  many of his works to organisations such as Endangered Wildlife Trust and WWF, which he will continue to do in the future.
