Robert McLean sees himself as South African figurative expressionist .
His work is inspired by the early expressionists such as "The Blue Reiter " movement in the early 20th century .
With a Pastos almost in Franz Marc's spirit he conjures his works, warm and glowing with strong bright colors and light in the center .
He has great love for his native South Africa's majestic scenery and landscapes that often gets translated into expressive and colorful pictures, well organized and yet spontaneously arranged. Under his careful brushstrokes he expresses his inner thoughts and feelings strong and narrative while they hold a strong vigor of expression and exudes great inner joy .
In a way, his works are a bit like Van Gogh's nature studies and yet not. Because of the colors ranging from African animals in red, blue and green for landscapes and personal portraits in violet and yellow, Robert McLean combinesan exotic heritage with European newrealisme.
As an artist, Robert McLean always respected realism and surrealism as highest forms for art, and having mastered them as a means of expression for many years, he has now found the freedom to express themselves spontaneously and expressionistic .

Despite McLean's strong expressions and fabulous flamboyant colors one oddly enough doesn´t lose a form of illusion that Africa's breathtaking, wild animals really are alive and present in his works.
Born and raised in South Africa (1952), Robert McLean admitted to the Johannesburg College of Art at the age of 17. He experienced the magnificent continent with its stark contrasts and harsh realities.
Thanks to his innate talent, the young McLean turned the many strong impressions into pictures. At first in the very traditional African - highly naturalistic style, later in a more surrealistic note. Neither the meticulously nor the speculative painting were satisfying enough for McLean.
The great, warm, enthusiastic and exuberant person's abilities soon manifested itself in an expressive manner with explosive, but extremely refined colors inspired by the early Expressionists.
His motives also includes portraits - among others, Nelson Mandela, a group portrait of Arresødal Private Hospital, furthermore McLean's version of HC Andersen's fairy tales as well as interior and fertile landscapes with McLean´s brush adding a touch of Southern French charm to them; clearly inspired by van Gogh and Henri Matisse.
Fyodor Dostoevsky once said, “It is the beauty that will save the world”. Robert McLean is contributing to that - gifted and virtuosic.

The tropical African wildlife found in expressionistic colors of the South African-born artist Robert McLean pictures.
With Pastos, almost in Franz Marc's spirit, he conjures the African continent's majestic giants under the unmistakable influence of the early expressionist´s such as the "Blue Reiter" movement from the beginning of the 20th century.
We encounter an Africa, which those of us that not yet have been there, only dream of in our imagination.
Warm and glowing - with the light in the center and rhythmically undulating landscape lines.
In a way similar to some of Van Gogh's nature studies, but otherwise without comparison in general.
Animals are freed from the cramped inhibitions of realisme - simply because of the colors, which can range from zebras in red, blue and green to the elephants and other mastodons in black and brown.
Robert McLean combines an exotic heritage with European New-realism.
He arranges rarely imaginative scenes with animals, but relate spontaneously to them through the colors.
Only the leopards and lions express melancholy and sadness as endangered species.
